Well, it's finally happened. My wife has mentioned the 'h' word. Not for me, but for her mother, who has lived with us for twenty years.
What a difficult decision. She's been easy to live with, even fun sometimes, but since a stroke and pacemaker about eight years ago we've found her an increasing strain. Dorinda (my wife) and I have not been able to go on holiday together for ten years. Last year Dorinda left her employment of thirty years to care for her. But with advancing alzheimers and loss of bodily function Dorinda's mother is now beyond our ability to care for.
The next few weeks will see us researching, talking to relatives, and trying to help Mother-in-law understand what is happening.
Oh, Russell. That's a tough one. Good thoughts to you and Dorinda at what is surely a terribly stressful and distressing time.

It's so good to hear that the twenty years she's spent with you have been positive and fun. Good luck with the weeks ahead and your decision.

What a tough situation! I hope you find a space that your mother in law feels comfortable and save in, that allows all of you a good quality of life!

give Dorinda hugs from me, been there done that, twice, with the H word. It's not an easy choice, but at this stage it is the best.

Hugs to both of you. I had to make the same decision about my father without the support of my husband, who eventually saw the error of his ways.

Thanks for the kind and supportive words! Things are moving slowly - all we're hearing is why each home we look into is a terrible place.
