Now reading: Tom Clancy! Yay!
I'm walking for my health. Now Hamilton is considered a boring city. In fact, it's the butt of jokes in New Zealand in the same way Canberra suffers in Australia. So, you'd expect my route to be boring, right?
Well, it's not. Hamilton has this great river running through it, and the council has provided magnificent walkways. So, for an hour a day, I'm striding out and frightening my fellow citizens with a generous exposure of well-turned calf.
Pictures tomorrow, because I can't get the picture function to work. Drat.
Of the river, I mean. Not the calf.

I was going to say something nasty :-) but really, I think good on you Russell......is Dorinda going too? You are right, Hamilton is a beautiful place to walk around.

How did you turn the calf? And why were you carrying a calf through the streets of Hamilton? Surely a lamb would be smaller? Or maybe a mouse? Mice are small enough not to frighten populaces, unlike small cows.

:) Pictures added...
Yay, I get so excited when a new post arrives (no, I don't need to get a life, why would you ask such a thing? *puts head quisically to one side*)!
Hamilton looks lovely, but then the only time I've ever been to Canberra I thought the same thing so maybe I'm biased towards 'boring' cities...

I suspect he used a special calf turning lathe, Gillian *g*

Isn't it interesting how much more you see when you walk instead of drive? I had the same experience- this year I've taken up jogging, and I thought I knew my part of Auckland pretty well. Shout out to the Howick massive! Who am I kidding? Howick doesn't have a massive. Anyway, I discovered a whole series of parks and walkways, all interlinked, long enough for a 5K run while hardly seeing a car. And an American Football field! That's right: when travelling by car, you can miss things as large as football fields.
The same thing happens when you travel by train, except then you get to see the rear of decrepit warehouses. There are many cities, and we get to see only a few. Usually when a city is criticised for being 'boring' it means it caters for residents before tourists.
I'll see if I can find a picture of the calf, or at least the lathe upon which it was turned, and post if for your delectation.

Inquiring minds wonder: is the calf golden?

Yum!!!!! You can't beat NZ for scenery. Go you, Power!Walking!Russ!
What keeps me coming back to this blog (apart from Russell's deep insight into the human condition) is the conversation that take place in the comments. What we really need is a method for measuring the distance from the original blog topic to some of the topics discussed in the comments. I mean, walking in boring cities to golden calves? Although the golden calf was part of the story of Moses who did spend a lot of time walking in boring places, so...there's a link, kinda!!

Not to mention the "fattened calf" AND we wont mention the cricket!! :-(
Posted By Linda / Posted At 4/21/07 12:05 PM
Ok, let's talk about the rugby league...no? Troy said something about "worst world cup loss ever..." but I don't know what he's talking about!!! We can do SOME things well over here on the West Island :-).
Posted By Jo / Posted At 4/21/07 12:22 PM
I'll give you the league, but the cricket was irrelevant. (I'm sure some of you think the cricket is always irrelevant!) Thank Troy for his continuing invaluable contribution to this blog :)

You'll have to forgive Troy, his office is filled with Sri Lankans and Kiwis (even a Sri Lankan who lived in New Zealand) who consider cricket to be slightly more important than say...religion, family or work!!!!
Posted By Jo / Posted At 4/21/07 7:50 PM
You don't have to excuse Troy. Russell was reasonably cheerful about cricket when Australia lost. If it were truly irrelevant it would come up less often in these comments. Like sack races, for instances. When do people seriously discuss the internatioanl importance of sack racing?

Gillian, the cricket is selectively irrelevant. I get to make the selection.
Just went for a river cruise with Dorinda after a day's interclub golf - I intended to have a new entry done but it'll have to wait now. I still have the story of Friday's non-meal with the Sheikh to tell you about ...
Posted By russell / Posted At 4/22/07 4:39 PM
What dishes get not served at a non-meal?

River cruise?? Do you own a boat now Russell??
Posted By Linda / Posted At 4/23/07 4:30 PM
He owns a barge and intends to invest in a donkey to pull it? He'l dye his hair black and buy an earring, as well.

I have Linda; who needs a donkey? Nah, we went on the Waipa Delta, a local river boat. Poor Dorinda; she'd just got back from the pictures - she went with some friend of hers - and I arrive home with two tickets for the cruise (and meal on board). I thought she'd be delighted, but I'd forgotten she had been to the movies. She enjoyed it anyway - or, at least, she said she did.
I do like the earring idea, though. Should I grow a pencil moustache?
As for the non-meal, Gillian, I can report I did not have a selection of Moroccan Lamb dishes, nor did I get to follow that with Arabian coffee.
I was supposed to meet the CEO of Banagas, the Bahrain company paying for the atlas I'm making (and the brother in law of the king), in Auckland last Friday evening. However, he was held up by traffic and didn't make our meeting. Sigh.

An earring? a moustache? black hair? hahahahahaha
Sorry, Jack Sparrow you will never be!!
