Cricket

 27-Apr-2007

A number of you have asked for my thoughts on the cricket.

Very well, though it's a painful subject. The cricket (family Gryllidae) is an insect closely related to grasshoppers, and is regarded in many parts of the world as a pest; though, perversely, often seen as a sign of good luck. The New Zealand cricket (middleorder collapsus) is generally seen as a harbinger of doom. It makes a great deal of noise but runs for cover when subjected to any form of stress. I have provided a diagram to explain the physical appearance of the New Zealand cricket:

The New Zealand Cricket

The recent Cricket Whirled Cup was a scientific symposium in which crickets from various countries were placed on a field and compared to one another. The New Zealand cricket did fairly well until it was matched against the Sri Lankan cricket. It is expected that the larger Australian cricket will be judged the leading cricket of the symposium; however, cricket-lovers from other countries are unhappy at this prospect, as this cricket crows rather than chirps.

Comments

Yay, two entries in two days, at this rate we will become spoilt and expect this on a regular basis. Obviously entymology is a sideline hobby for you, with years of observation providing you with valuable insights into this much maligned, yet stubbornly resistant insect.

I love the entymology, but I can't help feeling it was part of a plot to keep his calf from dominating the front page of the Kirkpatrick site for long. Pity. I was just about to blog "Calf of famous author on display. You missed him in his wondow, but don't worry, you can still see his bare flesh on the main page of his website. Such good fortune!"

I suspect I'm going to get more and more polite as it comes closer to your visit to Oz, Russell, but it's not quite yet and there's a sea between us so I'm safe.

Yes the Australian Cricket does crow a lot but I guess this is because he chews the heads off the other crickets.
Good luck Green and Golds!

Well done you Australians in the WCC. No matter how many of your top players retire you have so many more to take their place......now lets talk about World Cup Rugby :-)

Thanks Linda...not crowing, just grinning broadly!!!! Did you see the kerfuffle at the end of the match though? Can see there will be some reviewing of rules after this (at least I hope so!). Don't you love the way we take personal responsibility for our teams winning?

And so you should Jo, take responsibility. Fair dues tho' Aussie had won before bad light stopped play and at least those two teams were better matched and made for a more exciting game, unlike us, it is so frustrating....they have the ability but?????

Yes (cough) well done (choke) you Aussies (gag). I missed it because I was out golfing.

Quick, someone send an ambulance to Russell's place, he appears to be choking on a chicken bone... :-)

Did you golf well??

Ah, the golf. I play for a club, and out team needed a win to get into the final. It was a 'Boy's Own' scenario - I needed to win to get us there, and I was two down with three holes to play - I won the last three with birdies. You can't buy that kind of satisfaction.

So thanks for asking.

So you get to crow and the world is balanced :).

You could Russell if the game was rigged.

Wheres this new blog then ahe??? I hope you aren't slacking off writing about me again....there is only so much this donkey can do............

Seconded... All in favour? The ayes have it. Russell, stop having a life and blog man, blog ;)

I like your cricket Russell, it made me laugh ;) The description of the "eyes" is probably pretty fair too considering the ending of the "whirled cup".
Gillian mentioned a visit to Oz..? When are you thinking of doing this? (If you don't mind me asking) And is it for author related stuff or a holiday? :)

Ok no more questions..
Finally picked up Across the Face of the World today, so looking forward to reading it soon!

Hi Jason, glad you liked the cricket. I had to do something to let out my frustation ...

I'm coming to Oz in late September for Conflux, a SF/Fantasy convention in Canberra. So a bit of a holiday - a chance to catch up on friends (and Gillian) - and partly business.

And yes, Linda, I'm writing about the donkey this afternoon.

Russell, if it remains "friends (and Gillian)" you might have to miss out on lunch at my place. I only invite friends....

Oh dear. Friends, including Gillian, it is. I wouldn't want to miss out on another lunch.

I hereby invite you to lunch at my place when you're in Melbourne :). (I'll invite Trudi next week - you squabble so nicely together.)

Oops. Make that Canberra. I have Melbourne on my mind right now due to family crises. Lunch in Canberra.

I hereby accept, Gillian. Lunch with Gillian is an adventure for all sorts of reasons - if you don't believe me, check out her food blog!
