Mood: Pensive
Now reading: Just finished Bujold's 'The Sharing Knife' (meh) and Abercrombie's 'Before they are Hanged' (great!)
I'm making good progress on the current novel, and have one more planned in this series. That's it for this world. No more stories set in Faltha, Bhrudwo or Elamaq.
I'm going through my ideas bank for my next project. I'm considering a concept I've called Time Trading - it'd be a standalone scifi novel and love/hate story set in the world's near future. I'm also thinking of designing a new fantasy world, one which has an enormous history, a much darker world than Faltha, where life is inimical to humans. I'm wondering whether to employ the old trick of transporting a few modern-day humans there. Dunno. This world would be revealed in a series of linked novels. As yet I haven't got a series-sized idea, so it's on the back burner.
And a children's book about a donkey with the mange.
Your new inimical world sounds a bit like the "Planet of the Apes" Perhaps you could call it the Planet of the donkeys.....with mange :-(

Whether it's next or not is something else entirely, but I'd really like to read the time trading book one day :) Sounds a fantastic concept!

I'd like to write it, Fiona, but it might have to be squeezed between larger projects.
Planet of the Donkeys - nah. I'd be an ass to write that.

I'm not going to ask the donkey's name.

I suppose I had better hurry up and finish your first series, then... I am under a bit of pressure as I have just discovered a second hand book shop near my son's school that has a larger fantasy section than most new book shops. Spent a very enjoyable half hour talking books with the owner the other day and managed to find many more authors I want to read. So many books, so little time!!

Gillian, the name of the donkey, is negotiable.
I feel I need to apologise to you, Jo, for having my books get in the way of future possibilities. Read what you want to read. I don't mind if you discard mine.

'Negotiable' is a fine name for a donkey. I assume it gets called 'Neg' for short?
(It's evil-Gillian week, in case you were wondering.)

Look closely at the placement of the commas, dear Gillian.
Evil Ninja Russell sees evil-Gillian's week and raises her a month.
Perhaps if I write 'The name of the donkey is Gillian, but this is negotiable.' Nah, that removes the delicious ambiguity I was hoping for.

I wish I could do a poll on your blog. Do I write a ghost called Russell or a timid creature that cleans other people's houses? I've decided against the dormouse, because I don't need to be quite that mean because I brought your threat out into the open, which was the intent.
BTW, your mathematics is impeccable. A week of evil-Gillian is exactly euqal in effect to a month of Evil Ninja Russell's hard labours.

Hey Evil Ninja Russell!!!! Give my Billingham books back or I will come around to your house and whip you with my donkey tail...that I keep for special occassions :-0
Posted By Linda / Posted At 5/16/07 4:20 PM
Linda, there are probably whole websites devoted to people who like being whipped with donkey's tails...
Russell, your emoticon would have been effective in guilting me if I didn't already have children who have been trying this for years now!!

Sooo, Jo, do you have the address of these websites then.....purely for educational purposes :-)
Posted By Linda / Posted At 5/18/07 1:23 PM
Russell needs them? Or you need them, Linda? If you both need them *please* don't tell us :).

My lips are sealed

Please note, I said 'probably' with regard to the existence of these websites... Honestly, I have no first hand knowledge of such :-)
Sorry Russell, sad face still not working - I grew up with a labrador!!!!

OK, I couldn't help myself (curiosity is a dangerous thing) and I googled "donkey tail whipping". There really AREN'T any sites devoted to perverted sexual practices involving donkey tails...although I didn't look past the first two pages of returns, so anything is still possible (Linda, it's up to you now)!!

Dear oh dear! I'd better come up with another blog entry, as I've lost control of this one ... if my sad face doesn't work, how am I going to keep the lid on these strange people?
Posted By russell / Posted At 5/20/07 3:21 AM
The blog entries exist as a way of keeping us under control? I was certain it was the other way round.

Good try Gillian - no, I never set myself the fool's task of trying to control you. Only the blog, and that only half-heartedly. I'm enjoying the way the blog is going...
