Craft un-Fair

 23-Sep-2007

Went to a craft fair today with Dorinda. Dozens of stalls stocking exactly the same things, quilts everywhere, from the dreadful Appalacian geometric things to the most wonderful avant-garde, zany, colourful and three-dimensional stuff. And many middle-aged women.

A week ago I went to a home show in Auckland. Far busier, far more interesting (to me, anyway). But what is odd is that in the first five minutes of the craft fair today I was jostled and bumped more than my entire day at the home show last week. Bits and pieces of these aforementioned females brushed, poked and slid across my arms, back and chest, with no acknowledgement or apology. Erk. I didn't know where to look. Eventually I found someone I knew and talked to him while Dorinda overheated the credit card.

It was the weirdest thing ...

Comments

OK, so nobody else finds the rudeness of middle-aged craftswomen weird. Or perhaps the way I described it make you all feel creepy. Sorry about that.

At first I thought you meant one of those outdoor community art and craft fairs where the greatest danger is the occasional inconsiderate placement of prams or chocking on handmade muffins, but then the credit card mention made me realise it was of those 'Craft And Quilt Show' type events held at major convention centres. The ones where you get ripped off for parking fees, entry fees, and then feel obligued to spend at least twice as much more on crap in order to justify how much it cost to get there. Where if the crush of middle-aged women clawing desperately toward the bargains doesn't suffocate you, you'll be slowly asphyxiated by the invisible cloud of Avon perfume mixed with sweat.

Very scary places, those big craft fairs.

Ahhh Trudi that is exactly why I don't go........

I hadn't been to one before, and I admit to having been surprised by the scale and sheer intensity of it. I suppose some of the weirdness was realising how irrelevant I was to the whole thing, and now I know how Dorinda feels at the yearly home show.

We can match the intensity this weekend, I suspect, but probably not the scale. I'm currently in negotiation with 63 people to jostle you so you feel at home.

The depth of your care for me brings a tear to my eye and a scream to my lips.

Sorry, I was away, just catching up with the conversations.... Those women at the Craft Fairs are scary - that's my mother-in-law!!!
