Writer's Retreat

 06-Jan-2008

A few months ago a few of us organised a writer's retreat - simply a time when we all get together to get away from it all, just us and our keyboards. With alarming speed the time has arrived, and tomorrow (Jan 7th) I, Gillian, Kylie, Donna and Trudi, along with her beau, are off to beautiful Yackandandah in northern Victoria for just over two weeks.

I'll give you regular updates as to how it goes, but I expect to write 5000 words a day for two weeks. Just what I need to break the back of this third 'Husk' novel.

Back on the 23rd!

lots of writers, powering up their keyboards....

Here's hoping you will still be blogging, otherwise I won't have anything to read!!!

Have fun...er...work hard *grin*.

you'll be very close to the crumbling remains of my childhood home

If you're coming via Melbourne, chances are you'll be passing by where I'm staying at the moment (Broadford, just off the Hume Highway, about 45mins out of Melbourne).

Hope you all have a nice and productive time!

I'll wave, Emma, as Trudi drives past with me in the back ...

I shan't read anything you write about it. Not a word. I refuse. In fact, maybe when I read the third HUSK novel,I shall skip over the bit you wrote at the retreat. So there.

*sulks*

Hey Glenda, the first day was great!

Got to Melbourne to find my baggage still in Auckland. Had to wait for it to arrive. Then got a call from my offsider in Bahrain to say they were housing him in a hovel with no electricity or running water and could I rescue him? This with no internet and spotty cellphone coverage. Where did I put that valium?

Time to do some writing ...

Into the flow now - couple of thousand words yesterday, up early this morning and ready to burn some pages! Gillian is not behaving herself, which is good news for all of us.

for the curious: Russell is developing an Aussie accent. I think it might improve his writing.

I thought Gillian was locked in a shed...? Granny must have relented!!

Russell developing an Aussie accent!?
Gillian, if he starts saying kind words about Greg Chappel, I suggest you quietly arrange for him to spend a few days in the same shed.

Getting plenty of golf - I mean, writing done. We're all behaving ourselves and this really is a lovely part of Australia. Saw Victoria's highest mountain two days ago - it was a perfectly clear, 40 degree day but there didn't seem to be that much of it.

Ah well, I'd better return to the writing and try to figure out why this corpse has started to bleed.

Ah Russell (shakes head), started off by saying something nice and complimentary and then puts a twist in the tail and turns it into a sly little dig about mountains. Of course, only a man would be so concerned about size......... (runs away and hides *heh* *heh*).

The only people who say size doesn't matter are those for whom size matters.

Russell on a retreat with all females....and he calls it a "writers" retreat!

Heh, I knew that you would either bite or ignore me...*grin*.

Always bite, that's the way. Keeps the conversation going.

I make an important announcement and it gets eaten by the ether. (The ether is hungry in this isolated place."

I tried to explain earlier that Russell won't be going home, that we had found a back paddock at Burrumbuttock where he could rest happy after his sad accident. We managed to find a shipping container, though, and he'll be home eventually. I believe the route takes him via the Suez Canal, so don't look for him too soon.

The accident? Ah, that was the message swallowed by the ether. Russell has a bad habit of trying to outstare people, and he tried it on a magpie. They both froze permanently. Trudi has done a painting of it and we're calling Russ an Aussie and entering it for the Archibalds.

My blog actually has a Gillian-post-eating widget, to protect it from random posts like the one above. Since she has learned how to circumvent it, I will ask my webmaster to refine the widget.

Gillian has recently been on the receiving end of a number of my stares, mostly at her predilection of non sequeturs. (We are now arguing over the spelling of these words as I type.) The magpie thing is pure invention. The back paddock at Burrumbuttock, sadly, is not. There is such a place.

Apart from time-wasting like this, writing is going well. I'm well into Book 3 and the killing continues. Send me in the name of your favourite character and I'll draw a gruesome death out of a hat. No, Linda, not the donkey. The donkey is safe in Dhauria.

I think Paul would take exception to being called 'all female'. Mind you, I think he would take even more exception to being called a 'writer'.
